Uncommon."The manuscript from which this work is derived, presented to us by my father in the month of April, 1863, had lain long unnoticed, and almost forgotten, along with other ornamental and useful drawing room books, until the chance visit of a neighbour, and a reference equally accidental to Indian affairs, caused it to be produced and referred to. My friend borrowed the book, and in time returned it with genuine expressions of the satisfaction its perusal had afforded him, and thereby caused me to examine and re-read it more carefully than before, and, after some consideration and consultation, to prepare it for publication."- from the editor's preface, dated 1877."The following pages were not written with a view to publication, neither probably are they worthy of it, especially as the Overland Route to India is now so well known to the public [.] however, if this narrative be preserved, it may be useful in after times to show the best route and mode of travelling in 1845; for other ways may be adopeted, as doubtless will be the case in such an enterprising age as the present. // In fact, my object in writing it was to supply the want of agreeable occupation during the winter of 1861, when living almost alone in an isolated residence in Devonshire."- from the author's preface, dated 1863.
