Blue cloth boards with printed paper title label on spine. Page dimensions: 193 x 125mm. This copy with a printed"Copy of Letter"to May Morris from the Hammersmith Branch of the Socialist League tipped in at front endpaper:"Dear Comrade, We, the undersigned, fellow members with you of the Hammersmith Branch of the Socialist League, ask you to accept this gift of books [. . .] You have lived among us, and are endeared to us; you have worked for us with your best strength. Happily you do not leave us now. We feel nevertheless, looking forward to the near day of your marriage, that there comes a time in which a full word of goodwill may be spoken [. . .] We wish you and your husband good health and long life and all that men wish each other [. . .]"."To May Morris"printed at foot of letter. Later owner's pencil inscription at foot of printed letter:"This book label&letter were given to me by Mrs Lang a friend&neighbour of Wm. Morris". Wood-engraved bookplate with initials"H.S.L."and the motto"From the Branch to its Flower June 1890". Bookplate engraved by W. H. Hooper. Design by Walter Crane? Bookplate shows a rose branch with a woman's face [May Morris?] ]in the middle of a rose. William Harcourt Hooper did much engraving work for the Kelmscott Press. May Morris (1862-1938) was a daughter of William Morris (1834-1896), the English artisan, designer and founder of the Kelmscott Press. In 1890 she married Henry Halliday Sparling, the Secretary of the Socialist League.; 8vo
